Marilyn Monroe

We mainly know Norma Jean from the beauty that she was and that she also vigorously propagated in her role as Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn played her character gloriously and gracefully but beyond her beauty she was not happy deep down. With this painting I was looking for her natural appearance that she had as a beautiful person, not the pose that she had to be continuously. The icon apart from the throne, beyond the beauty.

I was about 9 years old when I saw "Some like it hot" and was immediately sold by the most attractive woman I had ever seen. Then I saw her perform in a documentary for a group of soldiers and I soon realized that I was not the only one who fell for her charms. "Happy birthday mr president" was something like the first moon landing.

Johnnie Cash

The many facets of his personality can be seen in his face, as well as his creativity for poems and the writing of songs with often a dark tone. I have included these many facets and darkness in the portrait. A very powerful look that seems to look right through you. A very interesting sight to paint.

A man with many contradictions, traditional and rebellious, a god-fearing Christian and a rebellious freebooter, but as always more than the icon and the "outlaw" the media showed of him. Like his father, Cash was looking for the solution in anesthesia, alcohol and drugs that he struggled with until 2000. Light and shadow go hand in hand. His last clip "Hurt" is heartbreaking, it shows the broken Johnnie who, looking back on his life, saw everything he loved fall away.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Bob Dylan

Painted after the "Rolling Thunder Revue" documentary in which a time frame of Dylan is humanized by Martin Scoresse, in which fiction and non-fiction are intertwined and there is no clear plot. His white-painted face inspired by the "Japanese Kabuki make-up" gave him a white canvas, an empty mask, on which the public could project everything. It is precisely with the white face that his character - from his eyes - comes out very strong. Which artist wants to be placed in a box and certainly not Dylan. This idea is the common thread in this painting / portrait. His hand seems to be playing the guitar.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Miles Davis

I wanted to capture his characteristic face in close-up, with this you can feel the drawn man through an eventful life, 'the Picasso of the Jazz', therefore also with some colored stripes in his hair. His fist gives the depth and character. Hands are an important aspect of a person's personality.

How I got to know him: 'Kind of Blue', this turned my dad gray when I was a kid. At that time I did not like Jazz, this only came later when I started turning it gray myself. Not everything from Miles's repertoire is nice to listen to, Miles was known for his renewed styles of Jazz in which he formed the pivot: bop, cool jazz, modal jazz and jazz-rock fusion. He later also used trumpet distortions with effects.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Chet Baker

In this portrait I have shown the deep focus of Chet completely one with his trumpet, often also unperturbed, he was one with the music. It didn't take me much effort to put myself in him and paint him like that. A flawless music memory and every note equally touched. For Chet, beauty is literally due to the grace of imperfection, also in his voice, this feeling and emotion is in this painting. Sometimes it is disastrous to work out details in a painting, disastrous for the atmosphere and emotion.

Chet Baker, I grew up with it. Music that never bores and in which you always discover something new. The summer feeling with every tone of Chet, instantly recognizable after one tone. The documentary "Let's get Lost", a must have seen, especially because of the atmosphere in which you experience a period of his life in a dream flight. Chet was not innovative, but what he did was intimate and modest and testified to great ingenuity in terms of melody and hues. See also a painting by the young "Chet & Halema".
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Thelonious Monk

Monk an innovative genius on piano and fighter against the current, at a time when it was fashion to play fast, he went against that current. In the 1940s, he formed a progressive group of musicians to make modern Jazz with Charlie Parker, drummer Kenny Clarke, bassist Oscar Pettiford and guitarist Charlie Christian. Monk was known for his eccentric traits of dancing around the piano, falling asleep on the keyboard, staring into nothing and the days of strange hats. Like many Jazz icons, Monk had known a tough childhood in poverty and did not earn much even when he was known. Monk remained strongly connected with his family and environment and did everything for this, I portrayed this sweet Monk with his beautiful individuality.

Louis Armstrong

The clown who wipes his sminck, the breakdown of the market after a busy day, the autumn that gives the trees a rest after a long heat. Louis played his last note after a debilitating tour ... the smile is tired, his lips broken. Peace. This is what I thought when I made this Satchmo painting. An artist with much more depth than the entertainer he showed us; where with Billie Holiday you can see the pain in the face, with Louis this is hidden behind the mask of the entertainer, in this painting he takes this off and tells us the story.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Charlie Parker

This portrait shows both the intensity of his play and of his intensive life. His intensity can be felt most up close, you can hear him playing from a distance.

Charlie (Bird) Parker was one of the founders of the Bebop Jazz. Together with Dizzy, Monk and Buddy Rich, Parker formed a brilliant Quintet in the 1950s. Birdland, founded at the time in NY, is still a household name in honor of the genius Parker (Bird). His passionate music and style of playing, passed on to improvisation, constituted a true revolution in Jazz. Parker was difficult to follow for the unknown listener to follow choruses and due to the major changes in rhythm sections.

His life was turbulent, his father left him at a young age, his mother went on night shift and left school at the age of 15 and entered the professional music circuit but also started using drugs. He learned everything through good listening and intensive practice and the will to experiment. The toll of intensive drug use had its effect and unfortunately he died young and without money.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Billie Holiday

Billie had the power to be so personal and close with the emotions in her face. One of my favorite recordings of her is 'Fine and Mellow', this portrait is also a screenshot of it. When you see her singing I experience what she sees before her, what she sings about. I didn't have to crawl into her skin either, everything was already present on the surface. Of course also because I have known her through image and sound for so long.

From a very young age I became acquainted with her music, especially my mother loved her. When I look back, her music never gets bored, her voice immediately brings back the emotions and is nowhere flat or dull. Billie found herself to sound like an old lady "Me and my old voice".
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Ella Fitzgerald  (Sold)

Ella was very shy and would rather sing than speak in public. In it she played the cheerful unbreakable facade to the audience. She has been able to keep her traumatic childhood and past almost her entire life to herself. Her past reveals her hidden past, but the rest of her face shows the certainty of the Ella standing on the stage, in the here and now.

What to say about Ella, so many prizes won, sung with all the greats, best song interpreter of the more than 250 'Great American Songbook. Famous for her amazing talent for improvisation and scatsing with or without Armstrong. Just an honor to have painted her.

John Coltrane

This portrait shows the almost possession (in a positive sense) of Coltrane, with the drops of sweat on his forehead approaching and a powerful look. See also the painting by John & Alice.

Coltrane, one of the most important and influential tenor saxophonists. He learned from Monk his fast playing style, which is declared sacred after his death (Saint John William Coltrane). A genius in one word. "A love suprime" the brilliant interpretation of "My Favorite things". His second wife Alice, a great jazz pianist and harpist with a very unique sound, in which the two inspired and influenced each other more deeply.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Keith Jarrett

This painting is inspired by a slide of one of his performances in which his characteristic "groans" can be felt, something that is nothing but the passion for the game in which he sits. Keith is a fantastic jazz pianist with a characteristic sound that you immediately recognize as a jazz connoisseur. Played with greats such as Art Blakey, Charles LIoyd and Miles Davis. Both as a group leader and as a soloist, he impresses with his charismatic non-verbal and verbal expression that you carry along in his playing.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Aritha Franklin

What a woman, what a voice with a warmth that she transmitted to the audience. I have captured this embracing warmth in this painting of her. "The queen of soul" should not be missing from this list. With her legendary performance of "Amazing Grace" as only she could bring it. Personally I found her role in 'The Blues Brothers' with the song 'Respect' mostly legendary.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Chick Corea

His creativity can literally be read from his face, I captured this with this portrait. 22-Time Grammy-Winning Jazz Legend, 63 nominations and 3 Latin Grammy Awards, Pianist and composer that is a title that nobody takes. Chick Corea, started playing the piano at the age of four. Played with many artists such as Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock ect. Enjoyment is also Chick Corea & The Spanish Hearth Band. I've always seen him as "Mr. jazz fusion 'for the Latin styles he made. I also appreciate this in Stan Getz.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Beyoncé Knowles

In this painting I chose to emphasize her power, her eyes didn't even have to be open to that. I was already a Beyoncé fan when Destiny Child was just starting out and was totally flabbergasted when I saw "Grazy in Love" her first solo performance. What a power and energy, clear to me and many to me that this would become a world star. Her role in Cadillac Records, as Etta James proved to me that she can also act well. It was if she was born for it. What a multi-talent. She is glamorous in every aspect but represents much more than the role she plays.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Bill Evans

I painted Bill Evans in what he was and how he was. With a romantic background, the composing, his big hands, the improvising and with the depth of his playing and the power of his gaze; he is there even though he does not look at you. Bill Evans was able to make an accordion that virtually no pianist could / cannot match. His classical background combined with Jazz and his incredible talent for improvisation makes him one of the greatest. He originally played in all kinds of combinations in the background and only later formed his own 'Bill Evans trio from which he no longer deviates. After a few tones you immediately hear that it is Evans, Autum Leaves, My foolish Heart, So What, Waltz for Debbie and the beautiful Peace Piece.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Cornelis Vreeswijk

Cornelis Vreeswijk. He had little success in the Netherlands, but he has become very famous in Sweden and he is still there. Not so strange with its fine voice and strong lyrics. A striking troubadour who had a rather turbulent life in private. In the painting I mainly brought the cheerfulness of this life artist, therefore I painted it with the cat. In my view, Cornelis was primarily a wonderful storyteller, with songs in which he spoke more often than sang.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole I have admired this genius almost all my life, with his great voice and timing and as a good jazz pianist. Nat was above all a very nice, loyal man, always well dressed, with a great sense of justice. The moment you hear him sing, he immediately falls into the class of Bing Cosby, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and perhaps a class higher, because Nat King Cole is the most out of this for me. I painted it with its characteristic but mostly authentic smile.

'Just friends' - Stan Getz & Chet Baker

The legendary concert from 1983 in Stockholm. A jewel to watch, from the beginning with the interview with Stan to the end where Chet is so absorbed in the game that he is playing a piece of Stan. They only performed twice in 1953 and 1983.

Technical Detail: However, there are no good photos of this concert, a one-sided corner of filming. so I made a compilation that I think was very successful. This is also Chet's third painting. Stan is depicted larger in the foreground, but Chet, seated, typically bent over on a high stool, is, on the other hand, more exposed, which forms an interesting balance in the image between the two.

Chet & Halema

Chet Baker was in the 50s for three years together with the beautiful Halema Ali with whom he also had a son. Their short marriage quickly turned into a rollercoaster for Halema with light and dark periods. Chet was privately a difficult man to live with, struggled with relationships to stay in equality and sometimes showed aggressive behavior.

This Sweet Miami atmosphere with the 'Playboy looks' that Chet had, the contemplation in his face and the shadow between Chet and Halema. Halema's hand seems to be close to Chet's trumpet as if she's holding him, leaning her head on his arm. What she seems to surrender to him, he stares into the deep, still lightly connected to her.

Jimi

Jimi Hendrix is still revered as a musical genius, especially for his revolutionary, flamboyant and virtuoso ways of playing the guitar.

He was seen less as the modest, sincere, vulnerable, philosophical boy that he was. A hard worker who radiated when he stood on stage and forgot everything around him. I have expressed this in this painting, working hard, having fun and enjoying the flow. Beyond the theatrical. The background shows the "fireworks" that he created with his guitar.

John & Alice Coltrane  (Sold)

The music of Coltrane brings you into higher atmospheres, his fast playing (learned from Monk) his character, the power of his music and his awesome creativity. He is seen as one of the most influential Jazz artists of all time.

After John freed himself from heavy drug use, he met his beloved Alice. With her by his side, he was able to deepen the spiritual path that he had followed. Apart from Western beliefs and more focused on Eastern spirituality. Great work has emerged from this, a love supreme, Alice was certainly not in his shadow but showed John the light even more. John's powerful gaze with the fist holding on to what he had found in my view. Alice in the background but bathed in light. Two great "spiritual" musicians.

Long Tall Dexter

Dexter Gordon entered a cafe in Rotterdam a long time ago where my father saw him. He walked towards the bar and drank everything that was on the counter. Now he felt - drunk as he was - sure enough. He stumbled onto the stage and started to play flawlessly as if nothing had happened and he had no problems. That was Dexter.

Unfortunately I had no image of this, but this beautiful image, in which a young Dexter sits behind his saxophone in Royal Roost New York. Background to the scene is made up and inspired by that cafe and after a black-and-white photo of Herman Leonard.

Billie

The life of Billie Holiday unfortunately has more tragedy than points of light. She also had little luck in her love life. However, she did have a very strong bond with Lester young. However, a band like 'brother and sister'. When Lester died, she was not allowed to sing for her 'Prez' (from president) at the funeral. Because of this, Billie almost succumbed to frustration and grief and said she was the next person to die. Billie also died a few months later.

This painting originated from a screenshot from the recording of "Fine and mellow". Background to the scene was made up / spontaneously created. Platonic love might have been stronger than if it had not been platonic, who knows ... The painting shows the subtle connection between the two.

Grand cafe in Paris

This large work is a story with a lot to see, nine men and one woman, it appears to be the center of the painting. The special thing is that all men seem to look at her. However, only the man in the back really looks at her. The man next to her has just said something to her, which charms her. She also has no cup of coffee, this would not suit wine, but a cup of tomato soup. The tomato, also called the love apple, symbolizes the game of seduction. However, her blue dress symbolizes her spiritual purity.

From a distance, the man who spoke to her seems to be laughing, from up close he looks more serious. It is dark outside and this shade is warmly lit in the Grand Café.

Passion!

This powerful ballerina strolls through the room with her skirt, floating in a dream flight. The translucent fabric dances with her. She does not wear pointed her bare feet look battered and injured. During the dance, however, she is so ecstatic that she feels nothing but euphoria and passion for ballet. The background seems to dance with her in muted colors; the trail of her skirt hits the ground, while her hair, in a bun, frees itself and blends into the background. She dances full of passion and in control with her body and mind. The moment I painted this I experienced the same.

The sweet struggle  (Sold)

This large painting is the symbolic story of the sweet love struggle. Man and woman form a unity and tension in the struggle of wanting to be together and loose. These angels in figurative abstraction form water and fire, ascend and come together again. The paint is thick on the wood and the colors are bright. A powerful flaming expression. The left-hand part 'the woman' was made earlier and only a few years later the man followed and the idea came together like a puzzle piece.

Joung ballerinas

'The American dream' was still alive in the 1950s with these young ballerinas. They were chosen to become big and lived their dream. Looking over New York in the fog, but this fog pulls up in their imagination and they only see the romance, the glamor and they want to shine in the lead. Which only a few strokes. One ballerina faces the viewer and even looks beyond that, is out of the imagination of what "may come", she is non-dual in the here and now.

Sunken city

The nymph winding under water visits a sunken city. Realism and surrealism in combination. This atmospheric large painting originated from studies with a model and photos. The attitude is virtually impossible and this impossible has been reinforced in surrealism. What could be better than mixing reality and fantasy, which is always possible with painting. The somewhat hard forms of Art-deco in the background have been softened by turning it into wood and creating graceful curl shapes. This reinforces the curly shape of the body, a body made entirely of dots and short stripes. Use has been made of over 20 layers, so that the body changes color under different light conditions.

Skin is a mirror, this is literally enhanced here. Sometimes it turns pink, sometimes green and sometimes yellow again, but it still retains the character of skin. The tension is in her hands, toes and her face, which is completely in the shade. Quite a large work, which was made with intermediate positions in a few years. This painting works best on a large and high wall.

Carnival

Like a Phoenix, she rises from the earth with her feather headdress. It is inspired by the Carnival, the start of the spring celebration in Rio de Janeiro. The queen (La Reina) shows off her decorated body. The feathers are curls attached to her back to accentuate the beautiful curve of her body line. Her feet are in strings moving with her body. Her skin is painted with stripes that reinforce the lines. Everything literally moves and dances along in this meter-high work.

Technical Details: This pose has been chosen from many sketches with a model, everything else is fantasy painted by heart and heart.

How hot is it to make a painting of your children really great. It was difficult because of their mobility, so in the end three photos were compiled into one image. David & Isabella

David Lynch and Isabella Rossellini with a challenging image full of power and excitement; a loving soft grip to her neck with powerful hands. She surrenders in softness and relies literally on his direction. The tension between the two is enhanced by the palpable attraction.

Isabella has always felt attracted to directors. David was also called "Tsar of Bizarre". That's why I painted David's head from a wide-angle lens to enhance the "bizarre" effect. This image is from the set of "Blue Velvet" even before they had a short relationship.

Father and Sun

It remains a special experience how a painting is created. There is a rough plan, a rough example usually a black and white image, the rest arises. The story, the faces, the colors, the clothing, the scene and the story.

No love is greater than the love of parents, a primordial concept. The warmth from the father to his son, who holds his child totally undisturbed. He also has no reason for fear and does not even know it. The boy notices the piercing eyes of the soldier behind him, a jealous look from the shadow that has something threatening. However, he is standing with his arms crossed, he is protecting himself and he knows that he is lower in hierarchy. The child is full of heavenly light - if it were an angel - and is protected by his chain with four-leaf clover, with a ruby in the middle, the stone of kings and makes a hand gesture of protection against calamity with his small hands.

The boy does not, however, protect himself but his father, from close by the boy does not look anxious but rather brave.

Michael

This painting has three layers: Up close a friendly face threatening from a distance and mystical in the dark.

The heroic archangel Michael with his liberating sword as patron and victor of evil powers. With his overwhelming golden light he conquers the dark. He cuts the negative ethereal (fear) cords with his sword and frees you from it. Enables us to think in equality as a free person.

When I made the painting I felt enormously inspired, free and let the purifying spiritual light flow. A powerful and large painting that opened, that keeps everything clean and protects you. the fiery masculine shines like the sun that doesn't become dull. The kingship and the divine in pure form. A nice search in color, atmosphere, appearance and achieving the right effect.
