Marilyn Monroe

We mainly know Norma Jean from the beauty that she was, which she also propagated with passion in her role as Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn played her character gloriously and gracefully, but beyond her beauty she was not happy deep down. With this painting I was looking for her natural appearance that she had as a beautiful person, not the constant smile on her face that you see everywhere and always.

I was about 9 years old when I saw the movie "Some like it hot" and was immediately sold by Marilyn. She was the most attractive woman I had ever seen. Then I saw her perform in a documentary for a group of soldiers and I soon realized that I was not the only one who fell for her charms. "Happy birthday Mr. president 'was something like the first moon landing to me.

Johnnie Cash

A man with many contradictions: traditional and rebellious, a godly Christian and a rebellious freebooter, but as always more than the icon and the "outlaw" that the media made of him. Like his father, Cash was looking for an anesthetic solution through alcohol and drugs that he struggled with until 2000. Light and shadow go hand in hand. His last clip "Hurt" is heartbreaking, it shows the broken Johnnie who, looking back at his life, saw everything he loved fall away.

The many facets of Johnny Cash's personality are carved into the folds of his face. Just like writing songs with often a dark undertone are part of this. I have included these many facets and darkness in the portrait. A very powerful look that seems to look right through you. A very interesting sight to paint.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Bob Dylan

Painted after the documentary "Rolling Thunder Revue" in which a time frame of Dylan is staged by Martin Scoresse. In which fiction and non-fiction run together and there is no clear plot. The white-painted face of Dylan - inspired by the "Japanese Kabuki make-up" - gave him a white canvas, an empty mask, on which the public could project everything. Characteristic also for Dylan, because which artist wants to be placed in a box, certainly not Dylan. During the painting I discovered that it was precisely through the whitening of his skin that it became Bob Dylan, through his eyes that are so characteristic.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Miles Davis

Miles Davis has a very characteristic face in my eyes. I wanted to record that in this close-up, so that you enter this brilliant man - "the Picasso of the Jazz" - with his eventful life even stronger. His fist brings depth and character.

Miles ’'Kind of Blue', my father played that record so often when I was a kid and when I didn't love Jazz yet. Only later did my love for jazz develop when I started it myself. Not everything from Miles's repertoire was nice to listen to, Miles was known for his innovative styles of Jazz in which he formed the pivot: bop, cool jazz, modal jazz and jazz-rock fusion. He later also used trumpet distortions with effects. That sometimes felt like barbed wire. Not anymore.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Chet Baker

In this portrait I have shown the deep focus of Chet. Completely connected to his trumpet, often undisturbed and one with the music. To Chet the following applies: beauty by the grace of imperfection, also in his voice. This feeling and emotion are in this painting. Sometimes it is disastrous to work out details; disastrous for the atmosphere and emotion. A voice that skips for a moment, a tone that starts tender and ends pure and powerful. That's the same with painting; you have to stop at the right time and don't work out certain details.

Chet Baker, I grew up with it. Music that never bores and in which you always discover something new. A flawless music memory and every note equally touched. The summer feeling with every tone of Chet, instantly recognizable after one tone. The documentary "Let's get Lost", a must to have seen, especially because of the atmosphere in which you experience a period of his life as if in a dream flight.

Chet was not innovative, but what he did was intimate and subdued and testified to great ingenuity in the field of melody and hues. See also the painting of the young "Chet & Halema" and Stan Getz & Chet Baker.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Thelonious Monk

Monk an innovative genius on piano, a fighter against the current, at a time when it was fashionable to play fast, he chose to go his own way. In the 1940s, he formed a progressive group of musicians to make modern jazz with saxophonist Charlie Parker, drummer Kenny Clarke, bassist Oscar Pettiford and guitarist Charlie Christian.

Monk was known for his eccentric traits. For example, he danced around the piano, fell asleep on the keyboard, stared at nothing during performances, and wore strange hats. Like many jazz icons, Monk had a tough childhood with a lot of poverty and did not earn much, even when he was known.

Monk remained strongly connected with his family and environment and did everything for this, I portrayed this sweet Monk with his beautiful individuality.

Louis Armstrong

This painting is the story of the clown wiping his face paint, the breaking down of the market after a busy day, the autumn that allows the trees to rest after a long heat. Louis played his last note after a debilitating tour ... the smile is tired, his lips broken. Peace.

This is what went on inside me when I made this Satchmo painting. An artist with much more depth than the entertainer he showed in front of the camera and on stage. Where you can see the pain in the face at Billie Holiday, this is hidden behind Louis by the entertainer's mask. In this painting he takes off this mask for a moment and we see that depth with a different side of Louis.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Charlie Parker

Charlie (Bird) Parker was one of the founders of the Bebop Jazz. His passionate music and style of playing, passed on to improvisation, constituted a true revolution in Jazz.

Charlie Parker's life was turbulent; his father left him at a young age and his mother worked night shifts. At the age of 15 he left school and entered the professional music circuit. He learned everything through good listening, intensive practice and his drive to experiment. Unfortunately, the move to music was also accompanied by drugs. Intensive drug use took its toll, he died young and without money.

His passion for and intensity in the game are contained in this painting.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Billie Holiday

Billie had the power to be very personal through the emotions in her face. One of my favorite recordings of her is 'Fine and Mellow'. This portrait is a screenshot of that. When you see her singing, you can tell from her face what she is singing about. I didn't have to crawl into her skin either, everything was already present on the surface. This is because I have known her through image and sound for so long.

As a little boy I became acquainted with Billie's music, especially my mother loved her. When I think back to this, her music never bored. Her voice reflects such direct emotions and never becomes flat or dull. Billie thought she sounded like an old lady "Me and my old voice," she said in an interview. But what an old voice.

Ella Fitzgerald  (Sold)

Ella was very shy and would rather sing than speak in public. In it she played the cheerful unbreakable facade to the audience. She was able to keep her traumatic childhood and past almost her entire life to herself. From her eyes the hidden past speaks, the rest of her face shows the certainty of the Ella that shines on stage.

Ella has won so many prizes, sung with all the greats, best songbook interpreter of the more than 250 'Great American Songbook', is famous for her great talent for improvisation and scatsing (with or without Armstrong). Just an honor to have painted her.

John Coltrane

This portrait shows the inspiration for Coltrane's play, with the drops of sweat on his forehead approaching and his powerful gaze.

The music of Coltrane brings you into higher spheres, because of its fast playing (learned from Monk), its character, the power of its music and its awesome creativity. He is seen as one of the most influential jazz artists of all time.

See also the painting of John & Alice Coltrane his second wife, a great Jazz pianist and harpist with a very unique sound. John and Alice inspired and influenced each other in each other's work.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Keith Jarrett

Keith is a fantastic jazz pianist with a characteristic sound that you immediately recognize as a jazz connoisseur. Played with greats such as Art Blakey, Charles LIoyd and Miles Davis. Both as a group leader and as a soloist, he takes you along in his playing and impresses with his charismatic non-verbal and verbal expressions.

This painting is inspired by a slide of one of his performances, in which his characteristic "groans" can be felt, something that is nothing but the passion for the game in which he sits. The reflections in his glasses form the magic and movement that he produces.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Aritha Franklin

What a woman, what a voice with a warmth that she managed to convey to the audience. I have captured this embracing warmth in this painting of her. With warm ocher colors, enhanced by the complementary purple color of her sweater. Her hand towards her throat chakra, with which I indicate that she sings uninhibited. 'The queen of soul' should not be missing from this list.

Beautiful is "Amazing Grace" as only she could sing and her role in "The Blues Brothers" with the song "Respect" both legendary performances.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Chick Corea

On the striking face of Chick you can literally read the creativity, I captured this with this portrait. You cannot ignore his personality, just as you cannot ignore his music.

22-Time Grammy-Winning Jazz Legend, 63 nominations for the Grammy Awards, and three Latin Grammy Awards. Chick Corea started playing the piano at the age of four and collaborated with many artists such as Stan Getz, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. Enjoyment is also 'Chick Corea & The Spanish Hearth Band'. I've always seen him as "Mr. jazz fusion 'for the Latin styles he made. This is what I also appreciate about Stan Getz.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Beyoncé Knowles

I was already a Beyoncé fan when Destiny Child was just starting out and was totally flabbergasted when I first saw 'Crazy in Love', her first solo performance. What a power and energy! For me and many with me it was immediately clear that she would become a world star. Her role in 'Cadillac Records' as 'Etta James' proved to me that she can also act well. That role was made for her. What a multi-talent. She is glamorous in every respect, but represents much more than the role she plays.

For this painting I have chosen to emphasize her 'power'. Her eyes didn't even have to be open to that. To me she is like a natural goddess with a charismatic gaze. I deliberately did not make her too smooth as often on photos.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Bill Evans

I painted Bill Evans in what he was and how he was. The composing, his big hands, the improvising, the depth of his playing and the power of his gaze; you can see them all in this portrait. He is there, although he does not look at you. Bill Evans was able to play chords like virtually no pianist could / cannot match.

His classical background combined with jazz and his incredible talent for improvisation make him one of the greatest jazz pianists. He initially played 'in the background' with all kinds of combinations. Only later did he form his own 'Bill Evans trio'.

When listening to his music, you immediately hear that it is Evans: Autum Leaves, My foolish Heart, So What, Waltz for Debbie and the beautiful Peace Piece are some of his leading songs.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Cornelis Vreeswijk

Cornelis Vreeswijk had little success in the Netherlands, but he has become very famous in Sweden and he is still there. Not so strange, with its fine voice and strong lyrics. A striking troubadour who had a rather turbulent life in private. In my view, Cornelis was primarily a wonderful storyteller, with songs in which he spoke more often than sang.

In the painting I mainly brought the cheerfulness of this life artist. He was also known for his sexually tinted texts, hence his somewhat naughty look. A playful image in my view with the cat there.
Size: 40 x 50 cm / 15,7 x 19,7 Inch

Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole, I have admired this genius since I was young, with his great voice and timing and because he is a great jazz pianist. Nat was above all a very nice, loyal man, always well dressed, with a great sense of justice. The moment you hear him sing, he immediately falls into the class Bing Cosby, Sinatra and Dean Martin. Perhaps even a class higher, because Nat King Cole is the most out of here for me.

I painted it with its characteristic but mostly authentic smile. The color green that you see back symbolizes for me its peaceful and harmonious character.

'Just friends' - Stan Getz & Chet Baker

This painting is based on a concert by Stan and Chet in 1983 in Stockholm. There are no good photos of this concert and there is only a one-sided angle of filming. That's why I made a compilation that makes it interesting. Stan is shown larger in the foreground, but Chet, in his typical bent-over posture on a high stool, is more exposed. This forms an interesting balance in the image between the two.

The recordings of this legendary concert are a jewel to watch for me; from the beginning where Stan is interviewed, to the end where Chet is so absorbed in the game that he is playing a piece of Stan. They only performed twice with each other, in 1953 and 1983.

This is the third painting I made of Chet, see also: Chet Baker and Chet & Halema.

Chet & Halema

In this painting I have created a 'Sweet Miami atmosphere', with the 'Playboy looks' that Chet had, the contemplation in his face and the shadow between Chet and Halema. Halema's hand seems to be close to Chet's trumpet as if she's holding him, leaning her head on his arm. What she seems to surrender to him, he stares into the depths, only lightly connected to her in his own world.

Chet Baker was in the 50s for three years together with the beautiful Halema Ali. He also had a son with her. Their short marriage soon turned out to be a roller coaster for Halema, with light and dark periods. Chet was privately a difficult man to live with, struggled to keep relationships equal and sometimes showed aggressive behavior.

Jimi

Jimi Hendrix is still revered as a musical genius, especially for his revolutionary, flamboyant and virtuoso ways of playing the guitar.

He was seen less as the modest, sincere, vulnerable, philosophical boy that he was. A hard worker who radiated when he stood on stage and forgot everything around him. I have expressed this in this painting; work hard, have fun and enjoy the flow. Beyond the theatrical. The background shows the "fireworks" that he triggered with his guitar playing. The expressiveness of his almost closed eyes give him something magical.

John & Alice Coltrane  (Sold)

John's powerful, telling look with his fist holding on to what he had found - in my view -: his wife Alice. She sits in the background, but bathed in light. Two great "spiritual" musicians.

After John freed himself from heavy drug use, he met his beloved Alice. With her by his side, he was able to further deepen the spiritual path he had taken. Apart from Western beliefs and more focused on Eastern spirituality. Great work has emerged from this, including 'A love supreme'. Alice was certainly not in his shadow but showed John the light more.

Long Tall Dexter

Dexter Gordon entered a cafe in Rotterdam a long time ago where my father saw him. Walked to the bar and drank everything on the counter. Now he felt drunk, but sure enough. He stumbled onto the stage and started to play flawlessly as if nothing had happened and he had no problems. Dexter.

Unfortunately I had no image of this, but this beautiful image (after a black-and-white photo of Herman Leonard), in which a young Dexter is sitting in Royal Roost New York, smoking behind his saxophone. Background to the scene is fictional.

Billie

The life of Billie Holiday unfortunately has more tragedy than Happiness. She also had little luck in her love life. But she did have a strong bond with Lester Young. However, a band like 'brother and sister'. When Lester died she was not allowed to sing for her 'Prez' at the funeral. Because of this, Billie almost succumbed to frustration and grief and said she was the next person to die. Billie also died a few months later.

This painting originated from a screenshot from the recording of "Fine and mellow". The background to the scene is made up, or rather spontaneously. The platonic love between Billie and Lester might have been stronger than if it had not been platonic. In the painting you see the subtle connection between the two.

Grand cafe in Paris

There is much to see in this large painting. Nine men and one woman. The woman is the center of the painting. The special thing is that all men seem to look at her, but only the man in the back really looks at her. The man next to her has just said something to her, which charms her. She does not have a cup of coffee, this would not suit wine, but a cup of tomato soup. The tomato, also called the love apple, symbolizes the game of seduction. However, the woman's blue dress symbolizes her spiritual purity. From a distance, the man who spoke to her seems to be laughing, from up close he looks more serious. Outside it is dark, inside the Grand Café is warmly lit.

A painting in which you increasingly discover.

Passion!

This powerful ballerina strolls through the room with her skirt, floating like in a dream flight. The translucent fabric dances with her. She does not wear pointed shoes and her bare feet look battered and injured. During the dance, however, she is so ecstatic that she feels nothing but euphoria and passion for ballet. The background seems to dance with her in muted colors; the trail of her skirt hits the ground while her hair frees itself from a bun and blends into the background. She dances full of passion and in control with her body and mind, her muscles tense.

The sweet struggle  (Sold)

This meter-sized painting is the symbolic story of the sweet minneck struggle. Man and woman form a unity and tension in the struggle of wanting to be together and loose. These angels form water and fire, ascend and come together again in a sweet battle. The paint is thick on the wood and the colors are bright. A powerful flaming expression.

I made the left part 'the woman' before and only a few years later the man followed; the idea came together like a puzzle piece.

Joung ballerinas

'The American dream' was still alive in the 1950s with these young ballerinas. They were chosen to become big and lived their dream. Looking over New York in the fog, but this fog pulls up in their imagination and they only see the romance, the glamor and they want to shine in the lead. Which only a few strokes. One ballerina faces the viewer and even looks beyond that, is out of the imagination of what "may come", she is non-dual in the here and now.

Sunken city

The nymph winding under water visits a sunken city. Realism and surrealism go hand in hand. This two-meter painting originated from studies with a model and photos. The posture is virtually impossible but therefore exciting. I further distorted the shape proportions of the body. The angular shapes of Art Deco in the background are softened by making curl shapes in the wood. This reinforces the winding shape of the body, a body made entirely of dots and short stripes. Over 80 layers of superimposed layers have been used, as a result of which the body changes color under different light conditions.

The painting has been made with large intermediate ends and has been standing still for a year to mature in my head.

The skin is like a mirror and I have literally reinforced this in this. Sometimes it colors pink, sometimes green and sometimes yellow again, but it always keeps the character of skin. The tension is in her hands, toes and her face that falls completely in the shade. This painting comes out best on a large and high wall.

Carnival

Like a phoenix, this woman rises from the earth with her feather headdress. This work is inspired by the carnival, the start of the spring celebration in Rio de Janeiro. The queen (La Reina) shows off her decorated body. The feathers are curls attached to her back to accentuate the beautiful curve of her back. The 'strings' around her body emphasize her curves. Her skin is painted with stripes that reinforce the lines. Everything literally moves and dances along in this more than two meter high work.

Technical details: this pose has been chosen from many sketches with a model, everything else is fantasy, painted by heart and above all from the heart.

Red women

This ode to the woman in her splendor and power forms a rich interplay of rough regions, stylishly displayed in the red of love. She is also a symbol of freedom and independence and proudly flaunts who she is. Her face is not visible, so that the viewer can think of it.

This painting originated from many sketches with a model. It is largely shaped with a palette knife, the paint is thick on it. This painting is made on canvas.

Iloisa (private collection)

Portrait of Iloisa, my dear wife and mother of our children. I know every detail of her face through and through. This comes to life in four ways from the short lines and points that make up everything. The hair that fades into the background. The wood that stands for growth, movement, development and renewal. The natural background of greenery and leaves represent the life cycle and fertility. And finally the sparkle of her character that radiates and gives love.

Mauro & Tadeo (private collection)

How warm is it to make a painting of your children. Really amazing. Because of their mobility, it was difficult to portray them, so I based the work on three photos, which are put together in one image. The background forms a natural part that turns into the couch on which our two little son sit. Both completely different in character and appearance. This also made it so beautiful to paint, because during painting and 'crawling in the characters' new layers came up in the characters, just as they are now a bit older, new layers come up again. Life is Beautiful.

David Lynch and Isabella Rossellini in a challenging image full of power and excitement; his loving soft grip to her neck with powerful hands. She surrenders in softness and literally trusts his direction. The tension between the two is enhanced by the palpable attraction.

Isabella has always felt attracted to directors. David was also called "Tsar of Bizarre". That's why I painted David's head from a wide-angle lens to enhance the "bizarre" effect. This image is from the set of "Blue Velvet" even before they had a short relationship.

Father and Sun

It remains a special experience how a painting is created. There is a rough plan, a rough example (usually a black and white image) and the rest is created. The story, the faces, the colors, the clothing, the scene and the story.

No love is greater than the love of parents, a primordial concept. The warmth from the father to his son, the father who holds his child totally undisturbed. The father also has no reason for fear and does not even know it. The boy notices the piercing eyes of the soldier behind him, a jealous look from the shadow that has something threatening. However, the soldier is standing with his arms crossed, he is protecting himself and he knows that he is lower in hierarchy. The child is full of heavenly light - as if it were an angel - and is protected by his chain with four-leaf clover, with a ruby in the middle, the stone of kings. With his small hands he makes a hand gesture of protection against disaster.

However, the boy does not protect himself but his father; from close up the boy does not look anxious but rather brave.

Michael

This painting has three layers; from close by you experience a friendly face, from a distance it seems threatening and in the dark mystical.

The heroic archangel Michael defeats evil powers with his liberating sword as patron. With his overwhelming golden light he conquers the dark. He cuts the negative ethereal (fear) cords with his sword and frees you from that, which enables you to think in equality as a free person.

When I made the painting I felt enormously inspired and free; I let the purifying spiritual light flow. A powerful and large painting that opened up, that keeps everything clean and protects you. The fiery masculine shines like the sun that does not become dull. The kingship and the divine in pure form. A nice search in color, atmosphere, appearance and achieving the right effect.

Women Rise

In a dream I saw the subject for my new painting. It was about the transformation in which you overcome your shadow (s) and let go of old patterns.
The phase in which you feel weak and everything around you comes in strongly. You are not who you want to be.
You can hardly resist. (Phase 1)

Slowly you conquer your shadow (s) because they no longer serve you; but it hurts because -whether it is a pattern that you want verlaten- you still too much stuck.
Being angry with yourself does not help you, just looking at the lesson you have learned with love ensures that you slowly get loose. (Phase 2)

Enjoying this new phase, you feel stronger than before. You are grateful, can again enjoy life and without hesitation to the fullest are who you was. Life is beautiful with all its growth processes. (Phase 3)

Life flows

From the ego, a shadow character has formed, looking down, judging and reveling in complacency. A character who is guided and fed by external factors such as pat on the back, material possessions and ovation. Criticism about own behavior is dismissed. (Phase 1)

The realization arises that this 'shadow character' no longer serves yourself. Slowly but surely, self-reflection arises out of pain and horror for the self-formed character and you realize that it does not want to be anymore, it is ready. This arduous process forms a transformation that still feels indefinite at the time. The person is in two minds, wants to fall back on the old pattern that masked and thus seemed to be safe. But the signal for transformation into the true self is too strong and inevitable. (Phase 2)

Farewell to the old to embrace the new authentic self.
Follow happiness and gratitude. Everything that feels old and clouded falls away, while everything that feels clean takes place, possibilities only increase. There is a flowing love for the self and thus for the other. What remains is real and flows, no longer tries to be happy, but is happy. (Phase 3)

Life flows on.

Nat & Frank

Nat & Frank never performed on stage together as far as I know. They were good friends and their voices and way of singing matched each other perfectly. During a performance in Vegas that is not on screen, Nat was not allowed to stay in the same hotel as Frank, this was so absurd that Frank himself refused to stay there, which led to Nat King Cole also being admitted.

The jump

We all face difficult choices from time to time, especially now. With our freedoms limited, the future is uncertain. Many of us do not know whether the work or perhaps life as they had it is the same after this crisis. Maybe and I hope so, it will be better. Either way it's a leap of faith.

This painting was given as a gift to two good friends of mine. Their daughter, less than a year old, immediately recognized herself. The most beautiful compliment I have ever had.

Tango

The eternal struggle of love of attraction and rejection between two lovers. Vulnerability, emotions and desires arise in that struggle or game, but also the dark side to reveal deep fears and hidden memories. The tango vigorously visualizes this sweet fight in this macho and macha * dance. (* feminine variety of macho).
